Microchipping Your Pet

Reunite With Your Pet

At Reed Animal Hospital we strongly recommend getting your pet microchipped, as it can drastically improve the chances of being reunited should they be lost or stolen. It is a simple procedure that can be done at your pet’s routine veterinary visit but can also be done during their spay/neuter. The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and contains ID numbers; the chip cannot be tracked like a GPS chip. When an animal is found and brought to an animal shelter or veterinary hospital, one of the first things they do is scan for a microchip. If they find a microchip and it has up-to-date information, they can quickly contact the pet’s family.

Benefits of Microchipping

In a study of more than 7700 stray animals at animal shelters, it was shown that:

  • Dogs without microchips were reunited with their owners only 21.9% of the time
  • Dogs with microchips were reunited 52.2% of the time
  • Cats without microchips were reunited 1.8% of the time
  • Cats with microchips were reunited 38.5% of the time

Keep Your Contact Information Updated

Among the shelter animals that had microchips, but were not reunited, it was found that most had outdated or no owner information registered with their chips. That’s why it’s important to keep your contact information updated.
